Washington’s 35 not enough to overcome Rams’ stampede

Richard Washington scored 35 points Thursday as San Jose State men’s basketball (2-9, 0-7 MW) lost to Colorado State (9-2, 6-1 MW) in Phoenix, 90-57.

Washington had his third 30-point game of the season and fourth one of his Spartan career.

The senior guard was a quiet 2-of-6 shooting to start the game as the Spartans trailed 37-11 at one point, but he woke up just before halftime to enter the break with 19 points. He continued his hot shooting into the early second half to bring that deficit down to as much as 16 points.

Washington scored his last points with 11:35 remaining in the game while the Rams pulled away to seal the game for good.

The Rams took advantage of SJSU misses and turnovers to the tune of a 24-3 scoring edge on the fastbreak.

CSU guard/forward David Roddy had a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds, as the Rams had four different players score in double figures.

No other Spartan scored in double digits, as non-Richard Washington players shot a combined 10-38 for SJSU.

Junior guard Trey Smith was the second leading scorer for the de facto home team with eight points off the bench.

The Spartans will look for their first conference win on Saturday when they play the second game of the series against Colorado State.
