Report: SJSU football in hot water with Santa Clara County

San Jose State football is reportedly under fire for their travel plans after winning the Mountain West Championship.

After defeating Boise State in the conference championship Saturday in Las Vegas, the Spartans returned to San Jose on Sunday morning.

SJSU’s head coach Brent Brennan said coming back was the “only real option” for his team because of the mental toll the season has taken on players.

The team spent 17 consecutive days on the road after Santa Clara County prohibited contact sports in November.

Per Santa Clara County rules anybody who enters from more than 150 miles away is required to quarantine for 10 days.

County Executive Dr. Jeff Smith told the San Jose Mercury News on Monday the Spartans could be fined, face legal action or even be prevented from boarding their Sunday flight to Arizona.

But SJSU says the team is within its right to come and go.

“SJSU based its travel plan on county directives that allowed players and staff who live outside Santa Clara County to leave immediately after landing instead of having to quarantine for 10 days,” university representative Kenneth Mashinchi told the Mercury News.

He added that players and staff who lived inside the county would be quarantining at home for the week, leaving only to get tested and make the trip to Arizona.

Smith says there’s no exceptions for the 10-day rule.

If SJSU was to follow the county’s instructions the team would leave on Dec. 30, just a day before the Arizona Bowl.

Santa Clara County’s rules originally called for a 14-day quarantine of anybody entering from 150 miles away, but shortened the duration last week.
