Mountain West football round-up: Week 6

By Gio Gaxiola — Reporter

Here are the final scores and recap notes from around the Mountain West this weekend.

Utah State (1-4) 41, New Mexico (0-5) 27

The Aggies secured their first win of the season over the Lobos in a Thanksgiving day matchup — thanks in large part to sophomore quarterback Andrew Peasly, who threw for 239 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 118 rushing yards and one touchdown. The Lobos displayed a valiant effort from junior running back Bobby Cole who rushed for 24 yards and two touchdowns. It wasn’t enough however as the Lobos have dropped 14 straight games dating back to last season. They will look to break that streak at home on Saturday against Wyoming. Utah State will play host to Air Force on Thursday.

Wyoming (2-2) 45, UNLV (0-5) 14

Nothing could stop the Cowboys rushing attack on Friday. The team ran for 399 yards and six touchdowns, three coming from freshman quarterback Levi Williams. 164 rushing yards came from graduate running back Trey Smith along with one touchdown. The Rebels were led by senior quarterback Max Gilliam who threw for 65 yards and one interception. He also led the team in rushing yards with 63 along with one touchdown. Wyoming will look to build off this success on Saturday at New Mexico. While UNLV will look for its first in the win column on Friday against Boise State.

Colorado (3-0, 2-0 Pac-12) 20, San Diego State (3-3, 3-2 MW) 10

The Buffalo defense showed no mercy against the Aztecs on Saturday giving up only a field goal. The lone Aztec touchdown came from a pick-six by junior cornerback Darren Hall. The odd thing about this match up was that it was not on the original schedule. Colorado was originally scheduled to play USC. However, due to COVID-19, both teams originally scheduled matchups were canceled. SDSU was scheduled against Fresno State. Colorado will travel to Arizona to face the Sun Devils next weekend. SDSU will play host to Colorado State on Saturday.

Hawaii (3-3) 24, Nevada (5-1) 21

The Rainbow Warriors gave the Wolf Pack their first loss of the season on Saturday. Hawaii was led by sophomore quarterback Chevan Cordeiro who threw for 246 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for 62 yards with one touchdown. Nevada sophomore quarterback Carson Strong threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. The Wolf Pack will look to bounce back at home next Saturday against Fresno State. While the Rainbow Warriors will hit the road to take on San Jose State.
