Scott Shaw, SJSU’s former director of sports medicine, quietly resigned last month amid resurfaced accusations of sexual misconduct, USA Today reported on Wednesday.
Shaw is the subject of a reopened Title IX investigation by the school regarding claims he inappropriately touched female athletes during treatment.
According to an email obtained by USA Today, Shaw’s last day at SJSU was Aug. 19.
SJSU president Mary Papazian reopened the investigation into Shaw’s conduct late last year after receiving 300 pages of information compiled by head swimming & diving coach Sage Hopkins regarding the situation.
Papazian, who became president in 2016, received the file in December 2019 and said it “gave [her] pause and [she] wanted to know more about what happened.”
Included in the file were accounts from former athletes about their experiences with Shaw, with over a dozen female athletes claiming he put his hand under their bras during treatment.
SJSU’s first investigation of Shaw was opened by the human resources department in 2009, following an individual complaint by a swimmer. The investigation concluded without finding any wrongdoing.
The current investigation is being handled by an independent investigator, and has been supervised by the CSU’s Title IX office since February.
Despite the fact SJSU cannot discipline Shaw if he’s no longer employed, the investigation will still continue, CSU System spokesman Mike Uhlenkamp told USA Today.
