San Jose State women’s tennis successfully came back on top to win 5-2 against Grand Canyon University (2-4), putting an end to its two-match losing streak on Saturday in Phoenix.
The Spartans (2-2) clinched the doubles point and garnered four singles wins in the non-conference match.
Junior pairings Savannah Sendar and Laura Malsert started out the match by leading SJSU to a 6-3 win over GCU seniors Emilia Occhipinti and Celina Buhr.
Spartan senior Tamara Culibrk and freshman Rozalina Youseva dropped their 6-2 doubles match.
SJSU doubles pairings sophomore Alba Pedrero Galindo and freshman Lara Marco Mas defeated their GCU opponents, winning the match 6-3.
After two doubles wins, the Spartans led 1-0 going into singles.
Both Culibrk and Pedrero Galindo fell in their singles sets.
Youseva triumphantly defeated GCU freshman Natasha Puehse 6-3, 6-4.
Sendar won in straight sets 6-3, 7-6, 7-4.
With two single-matches won, SJSU lead 3-2, but it was up to Malsert and Marco Mas as the deciding factors to remain ahead.
Marco Mas defended the court 6-4, 6-4 against GCU junior Martina Lo Pomo for her final match.
Malsert battled against her opponent 7-6, 7-5, 7-5 and ultimately guided the team to a 5-2 victory to end the afternoon.
The Spartans will stay on the road as they head to Saint Mary’s Friday for a match at noon.
