San Jose State men’s golf team held their own as they placed 8th at the Amer Ari Invitational in Waikoloa, Hawai’i.
The Spartans shot an 852 during the weekend at Waikoloa Kings’ Course. It was a positive result for head coach John Kennaday and his squad considering there were nine top-30 teams in the 20-team field.
No. 1 ranked Pepperdine finished on top with a three-day score of 825. It was Pepperdine’s second tournament win of the spring season.
SJSU was led by sophomore Parker Sisk and freshman Carl Corpus as they tied for 33rd at 212. Sisk saved his best golf for Saturday as he shot a 5-under 67, which included 7 birdies on the scorecard.
Corpus shot a 3-under 69 on Thursday but managed to shoot 1-under 71 on Friday and a 72 on Saturday.
Senior Sean Yu helped the Spartans vault into the top ten of the team leaderboard on Friday with a 5 under par 67. However, he struggled as he shot 73 on Thursday and Saturday.
Junior Bryce Wortman shot 72 on all three days as he finished tied for 56th.
Freshman Caleb Shelter shot 72 on Thursday and Friday. Shelter experienced a nightmare in paradise as he shot an 81 on Saturday. The freshman finished in a tie for 97th.
William Mouw of Pepperdine earned his first collegiate win as he defeated Mason Anderson of Arizona State in a sudden death playoff. Both of them finished at 203.
The Spartans rallied to get a top-10 finish after they were in 12th place after Day 1.
SJSU continued to show consistency as it have finished inside the top-10 in all six tournaments this season.
The Spartans will have one month off before playing at the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Oregon. The tournament is from March 8 to 10.
