Spartans find some success at Cal Cup

San Jose State women’s water polo continued to improve as it split both days of the Cal Cup at Berkeley.

The Spartans (3-4) started off with a matchup against Fresno State (2-4), beating the Bulldogs 7-6. SJSU never trailed in the game, and was inevitably able to fend off Fresno State.

The Spartans broke open a 2-2 second-quarter tie with consecutive goals by Caroline Kerwin, Olga Descalzi Portell, Lili Urvari’s second score of the match, and Riley Agerbeek for a 6-2 lead midway through the third quarter.

Against No. 3 UC Irvine, the Spartans weren’t as successful and fell to a 14-6 loss.

The Anteaters scored the last goal of the first half, and UC Irvine only lead 6-3 heading into the third quarter. They were able to blow the game wide open and handed the Spartans a loss to close out the day.

On the second day of the Cal Cup, SJSU snagged a 9-8 win against No. 6 Cal. Goalkeeper Hannah Henry was credited with six saves.

The win is the second time in school history that SJSU beat the Golden Bears. The other Spartan win over Cal was a 14-13 overtime win on Feb. 10, 2007.

The Spartans closed out the day with an 8-7 loss to UC Davis.

SJSU will play their first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation games against UCLA on Jan. 31. Following this game are two more on the UCLA campus on Feb. 1 against UC Irvine and Long Beach State.
