San Jose State women’s basketball starting forward Tyra Whitehead was awarded the Mountain West Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.

The announcement came Monday morning after the junior’s two double-doubles against New Mexico and Air Force.

Whitehead’s best game came on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at the Provident Credit Union Event Center.

She scored 18 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field and grabbed 16 rebounds. Whitehead added four assists that would tie her season-high.

On Saturday, Jan. 25, Whitehead continued to beat out her opponents in the paint as the Spartans traveled to USAFA, CO to take on Air Force.

She matched her rebounds from the previous game with 16 and shot 44 percent as she put up 11 of the Spartan’s 68.

In her first season at SJSU, Whitehead has completely taken the Mountain West by storm.

The Spartans are now sitting at 14-6 overall and are 8-1 in conference play.

With over a month left to play in the regular season, it would come as no surprise if Whitehead was able to earn this award again.

SJSU women’s basketball will face-off against Boise State as they try to continue their five-game winning streak on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m.
