San Jose State men’s soccer (5-10-2, 5-3-2 WAC) topped the University of the Incarnate Word (4-12-0, 1-9-0 SC), 2-1 on Sunday.
With this win, the Spartans advance to the Western Athletic Conference tournament.
SJSU has placed second in the tournament each of the last two seasons.
Third time was the charm in this game for junior forward Rodolfo Castro. He took his first shot at the UIW goalie at the seven minute mark and again at the 11 minute mark. Both times were unsuccessful. At 18:55 of the first period, Castro was assisted by junior defender Omar Lemus to put the Spartans on the board, 1-0.
After the first goal, the Cardinals stepped up their game and started taking shots at freshman goalie David Sweeney. Sweeney finished the game with six saves.
Taking advantage of UIW’s mistakes, the Spartans charged down the field. Junior midfielder Carlos Gomez-Zavala kicked the second goal for SJSU to make the lead 2-0.
Four minutes later, UIW’s Koen Vos scored the first goal for the Cardinals and made the game 2-1. The first period ended shortly after.
The second period of the game was scoreless for both teams. SJSU took five shots on the goal while UIW had 13.
In total, there were 21 fouls in the game.
Before the WAC Tournament begins, SJSU will have one more game on the road.
The Spartans head to Seattle to play against the Seattle University Redhawks (12-3-3, 9-0-1 WAC) Nov. 9 at 1 p.m.
