Men’s soccer comes away with draw in the desert

San Jose State men’s soccer (2-8-1, 2-1-1 WAC) drew 2-2 after 110 minutes of battle against GCU (4-3-3, 1-1-2 WAC) on Friday.

It was the first time of the season that the Spartans ended up with a draw.

The Spartans outshot the Lopes in the second half 9-5, but GCU was the first to scratch the scoreboard with a 68th minute goal.

SJSU head coach Simon Tobin’s team was determined to walk away Friday night with a result and looked to be the offensively savier team throughout the match.

Junior forward Rudy Castro made attacking runs against the Lopes’ backline all game and scored his fifth goal of the season when the Spartans leveled the score 1-1 in the 81st minute.

SJSU began the game by pressing the Lopes’ high up the field, setting the tempo and tone for much of the match until GCU’s junior midfielder Justin Rasmussen slid one past freshman goalkeeper David Sweeney in the 83rd minute.

As both defensive backlines managed to stifle passing lanes and deny goal scoring opportunities, SJSU kept the pressure on, leading to San Jose native Angel Farias’ last minute equalizer with two minutes left in regulation.

Despite a contentious overtime period that saw three straight fouls called on GCU, the Spartans will travel back home to San Jose with a 1-1 draw result after dueling in the desert.

San Jose State will travel to Las Vegas to take on the UNLV Rebels on Sunday, October 13 starting at 10:30 a.m.
