San Jose State women’s volleyball (6-11, 1-5 MW) took out Air Force (5-13, 2-4 MW) in three sets at home Saturday.
This game gave the Spartans their first conference win of the season. They won the sets 25-17, 25-20 and 25-21.
The victory for SJSU ended a six-game skid.
“Some of the players decided that they were going to play big no matter what,” said head coach Jolene Shepardon. “We’ve had a couple of matches where we’ve been up 2-0, and so this was a great opportunity for us to see if we could close.”
SJSU came out swinging with Fernanda Vido at the helm. She and Latahevai Lousi each led the team with 11 kills.
Vido also finished with 13.5 points, 10 digs, and two aces.
“I think this win just tells a lot about what we’re doing behind the scenes,” said Vido. “We’ve been working everyday … we trust in the work that we put in as players.”
The Spartans closed out with a game side-out percentage of 58.3, which was their highest since their last win seven games ago.
This is their fourth straight-set win of the season.
There were only 10 tie scores and five lead changes the whole game. Six of those ties were in the second set. The Falcons began to show life, but SJSU was able to pull away with two-consecutive point streaks of four and five.
“We’re back to taking big risks, big swings … and going for all out plays and really staying in on those long rallies,” said Lousi. “We kind of gained our confidence back.”
This win kicked off a home stand for the Spartans as they look to snag more wins.
Their next game is against the UNLV on Oct. 17 at 6 p.m.
