San Jose State women’s swimming and diving fall behind in season opener

Competing in the first swim meet of the 2019-2020 season, San Jose State women’s swimming and diving had 15 top-15 finishes at the Chick-Fil-A Invitational in Fresno during a two-day meet. 

Partaking in the invitational alongside the Spartans was Fresno State, New Mexico, UC Berkeley, Washington State and San Diego State.

On the first day, Freshman Rebecca Petoe swam the 200 yard IM coming in at 2:10.93 for her first meet as a Spartan. 

SJSU came in ninth place in the 200 yard medley relay with a set time of 1:47.60 compared to Cal whose four swimmers posted 1:40.97.

Out of 36 swimmers for the 500 yard freestyle, SJSU senior Erin Wayman clocked in at 5:09.24 placing in 17th position.

For the 50 yard freestyle seniors Antoinette Loya placed 14th with a final set time of 24:.23 and Katie McIntee not too far behind Loya came in at 24.44, nearly 19 milliseconds later. 

Swimming in the 200 yard freestyle relay, Loya, McIntee, Petoe and senior Kimberley Giggey clocked in at 1:28.26, placing seventh.

Sophomore Chloe Limargo finished in 12th place right behind Petoe who came in at 1:06.14 for 10th place in the 100 yard breastroke. 

Finishing right under the one-minute mark, junior Madison Grimes swam the 100 yard backstroke in 58.18 coming in at 13th place.

Closing out Friday evening, SJSU swam the 800 yard freestyle putting up the team for a sixth place finish.

On the last and final day of the invitational, SJSU opened up the meet with Grimes swimming the 200 yard backstroke clocking in at 2:07.01 for a 19th place finish.

For the 100 yard freestyle, Cal junior Abbey Weitzel dominated the final heat coming in first at 48.15 followed by SJSU McIntee finishing 15th place and Loya behind her in 17th position. 

Spartan sophomore Cali Rowland swam the 200 yard breaststroke finishing in 13th place touching the wall at 2:23.09.

SJSU junior Jacqueline Nisson placed 17th for the 200 yard fly at 2:17.01, 18 seconds behind first place winner Cal Sophomore Isabel Ivey. 

The Spartans ended the invitational with a ninth-place finish in the 400 yard IM clocking in at 3:30.80. 

Up next, SJSU will remain on the road as they head to Bakersfield for the CSUB Sprint Classic and the Roadrunner Invitational for another two-day meet, beginning Friday, Oct. 18.
