This marks the third straight loss for SJSU (5-8, 0-2 MW) and the team continues to struggle to find consistency both offensively and defensively.
Fresno State (9-5, 2-0 MW) came out firing on all cylinders to defeat San Jose State 25-19, 25-25, 25-18 in straight sets.
The Bulldogs haven’t lost a set during their four game winning streak.
“We need to be a little bit more crisp in our minds in order to see the gameplay clearly and be able to go out there and execute,” said head coach Jolene Shepardson.
The first set was highly competitive and involved three lead changes.
The Bulldogs pulled away late and went on a 11-3 run to conclude the opening set.
Fresno State dominated the second set and jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the early going.
The Bulldogs’ combination of relentless defensive effort and team chemistry carried them throughout the match.
“We have good fights at times. It’s been a little bit of a roller coaster,” Shepardson said. “I think we got down at certain times and we can have a little bit more courage in those moments.”
The Spartans did what they could to keep the match close, but simple mental mistakes prevented SJSU from mounting any type of comeback.
The game-winning point for Fresno State came off a bad SJSU serve that banged into the net.
San Jose State will attempt to bounce back when they hit the road and take on Utah State on Oct. 3.
