San Jose State women’s soccer (2-5-2) tragically fell in the Mountain West Conference (0-1) opener to Colorado College (6-1-0, 1-0 MW) on Friday evening at Washburn Field.
This was the first time the Tigers took out the Spartans in six years.
Within 15 minutes into the first half, Tiger junior defender Camille Weaver missed a goal-scoring opportunity with a header that went wide.
A powerful shot was taken by SJSU senior forward Jennifer Orozco but was blocked by freshman goalie Abby Opperman at 22 minutes.
There was an ongoing battle on the field as Tiger freshman defender Hailee Rasmussen launched a strong shot from the left side that nearly just missed the Spartan net.
A foul was called just outside of the box and SJSU players heavily blocked the kick just after the 30th minute mark.
The first half ended tied at 0-0 with both both defenses playing well but neither team created any successful opportunities to score.
Senior forward Jamilexcth Becerra had a quick run around a Tiger defender and kicked the ball and it hit the post on the far-side.
Coming back into the second half Colorado College put the team on the board into the seventh minute of play.
A super save was made by Spartan sophomore goalie Ariana Romero clearing out the zone.
She had 3 saves in the game.
A shot was taken by SJSU freshman defender Jada Wilson, but it missed right with less than a minute remaining in the game.
Colorado held on to its one-goal advantage.
The team put in multiple shots off the post in the second half and had scoring chances but it wasn’t enough.
The Spartans will remain in Colorado to play a second Mountain West Conference game against Air Force on Sunday at 11 a.m.
