San Jose State (5-7, 0-1 MW) battled San Diego State (8-4, 1-0 MW) Thursday in the Mountain West women’s volleyball opener.

The Spartans lost their game 2-3 with the Aztecs taking home the win in the fifth set.

This game was particularly interesting because the Spartans trailed 0-2 against the Aztecs and came back strong in the third and fourth sets.

SJSU took the Aztecs to five sets by winning the third set 25-21 and the fourth set 28-26.

In the fifth set, the score was extremely close with the Aztecs up 15-13.

SJSU head coach Jolene Shepardson challenged what would have been the game-winning point to then extend the game with a tied score of 14-14.

The Spartans choked with a service error that advanced the Aztecs with a 15-14 lead.

After SDSU gained possession of the ball, they closed out the game-winning point rally with a kill.

The Aztecs beat the Spartans 16-14 in the fifth set to win the game 3-2.

Junior outside hitter Latahevai Lousi led the Spartans in hitting statistics with a total of 12 kills.

While sophomore libero Sarah Smevog led the Spartans defense with a total of 19 digs.

Freshman setter Drae Fresenius had an exceptional defensive game after coming off the bench for the Spartans with 17 assists and 15 digs.

The defense at the net and the back row from the Spartans was exceptional, but fell short to the Aztecs in their offensive play.

The Spartans were only able to obtain 30 kills against the Aztecs.

SJSU will take on Fresno State at home Saturday, September 28 at 2 p.m.
