San Jose State women’s soccer (2-4-2) came up short 2-1 in overtime against Portland (3-2-2) in their last non-conference game.
The Spartans started off the game aggressive, with senior forward Jamilecxth Becerra scoring the only goal on the day in the 9th minute.
“We started off really strong,” Becerra said, “and then second half, like somewhere in the middle, we kind of let our foot off the pedal.”
San Jose State had nine shots in the first period while Portland only had three. The Spartans also recorded seven corner kicks.
Sophomore defender Jada Wilson and senior defender Kristen Amarikwa were making plays to keep the ball from getting near the goal while forward Jennifer Orozco had four shots with two on goal.
But the Pilots’ freshman goalkeeper Jenny Wahlen saved six shots in the first period, not allowing another goal after giving up one early.
“We had a lot of shots on goal and a lot of great chances,” head coach Lauren Hanson said. “At the end of the day, soccer is about finishing your opportunities and they did a great job of finishing theirs and we didn’t finish ours.”
Following halftime, the momentum completely switched. The Pilots became the aggressors and took over the time of possession.
The game got real chippy towards the end, with players from both teams receiving several warnings and penalties. By the end of the game, yellow cards were issued to both sides.
The Spartans gave up seven shots in the second period, with a late goal from defender Ellie Walker in the 86th minute that tied the game.
After regulation, Portland kept up the pressure and allowed their forwards to make a play. Taryn Ries scored the game-winning goal for the Pilots in the 93rd minute.
San Jose State will put this loss behind them as they focus on conference play. The Spartans will face Colorado College and Air Force next weekend in Colorado Springs.
