Rain, rain, stayed away, the Spartans just had three great days.
San Jose State finished third (+5), as Ball State (-11) won the season-opening Golfweek Conference Challenge over the weekend.
Hosted in Cedar Rapids by the University of Iowa, the event featured schools from all over the country, from Sacramento State to Philadelphia’s Drexel University.
Despite being the very first competition, the new guys led the way for SJSU.
Freshman Caleb Shetler (-4) was on top for the Spartans by scoring four birdies and an eagle in the final round, to place him in a tie for 6th overall.
The next Spartan on the leaderboard—and the last one to finish under par—was freshman Carl Corpus (-1). After finishing the first round a stroke over par, he used a -3 second round to climb back under, where he would finish the event.
Bryce Wortman (+1), Parker Sisk (+3), Nate Jetter (+7), Sean Yu (+9) and redshirt freshman RJ Cesario (+13) rounded out the team for SJSU.
The Spartans improved their No. 4 finish in last year’s rain-shortened Golfweek Conference Challenge. Wortman and Yu were the only Spartans from 2018’s team to return for this weekend’s competition, but neither improved on last year’s scores.
This is the first of a 10-match regular season for the Spartans, a season that takes them all over the west coast and Hawaii, before concluding at home with the 74th Annual Western Intercollegiate.
The Spartans’ next event is the Nick Watney Fresno Invitational in Madera, Calif., from September 30- October 1.
