SJSU offense dominates in win over Aztecs

San Jose State softball (18-16, 7-4 MW) took Game 2 to tie up the series against San Diego State (18-21, 7-4 MW) behind a red-hot offense and a stellar pitching performance from freshman Jenessa Ullegue.

The Aztecs got the early lead over the Spartans in the second inning as sophomore infielder Kelsey Munoz doubled to left center to plate Taylor Adams.

The game fell quiet as neither team was able to produce anything offensively to get on the scoreboard.

The Spartans began to fire up in the fifth inning to gain the lead in an offensive momentum that was essential in tonight’s win.

Sophomore outfielder Jacey Phipps provided the spark as she roped one to left field to plate freshman outfielder Taylor Tiger.

A wild pitch from the Aztecs gave the Spartans the 2-1 lead as sophomore infielder Rayohna Sagapolu slid home safely.

Senior infielder Madison Aurin came up with a huge three-run homer to left field that solidified SJSU’s 4-1 lead in the fifth. The homer was Aurin’s fourth of the season.

The Spartans hot bats came back to complete the game.

Freshman infielder Alyssa Graham launched her third home run of the season to left center to tack on two more runs to increase the lead.

The Aztecs responded in the seventh inning with a home run, but it was not enough to regain the lead.

Freshman pitcher Jenessa Ullegue excelled on the pitching mound. Ullegue dealt 7 strikeouts and only allowed 3 hits through seven complete innings.

The series is now all tied up.
The rubber match is Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
