San Jose State softball (26-13, 6-4 MW) left 12 runners on base as it fell to San Diego State (18-21, 6-7 MW) in eight innings, 3-2.
The Spartans were able to get on base against the Aztecs through only singles and walks, and were never able to find a rhythm on offense with runners in scoring position.
The first run scored for SJSU came in the second inning when senior Kristen Heffley walked with bases loaded and scored freshman Jenessa Ullegue.
In the fifth, Ullegue singled to center field and received an RBI of her own as junior Cassidy Clark crossed the plate.
Sophomore pitcher Caroline Bowman started off strong and only gave up one hit in the first three innings. She then finished the day with a 3.07 ERA in seven innings by allowing eight hits and two earned runs.
SDSU junior pitcher Marissa Moreno gave up seven walks and five hits.
Aztec junior Shelby Thompson was the hero of the night as she hit a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the eighth.
The Spartans need to figure out how capitalize with runners in scoring position or else they will not be able to win this series against the Aztecs.
Game 2 of the series will be at 6 p.m Saturday.
