San Jose State women’s beach volleyball (11-7) claimed a 4-1 road win against crosstown rivals Santa Clara University Tuesday afternoon.
The Spartans were able to ride off SCU (2-8) for most of the afternoon, yearning for a win in sight for their final match in California for the 2019 season.
The pair of sophomore Ryann Thompson and junior Fernanda Vido started out the match winning in both their sets 21-16, 21-14 against SCU sophomores Gretchen Reinert and Brittany Gillingham.
Senior Julia Golbeck and freshman Sarah Smevog were unable to defend the court and fell in two sets 21-10, 23-21 against their Bronco opponents.
The mighty Brazilian senior duo Luiza Andrade and Giulia Gávio won their sets 21-19, 21-13 for their last Bay Area match of their SJSU athletic career.
On the same team since freshman year going through numerous practices together, Andrade and Gávio are content with how they played in their match today.
“We did really well,” Gávio said. “We played our best and a lot of people came to watch us and it was encouraging to see and we just wanted to play for each other and the team.”
Andrade saw today as another opportunity to keep getting better.
“We tried not to think about our last match,” Andrade said. “We’ve just been working in practice and other things and we tried to come out here and do our best. We had people come out and watch us, it was fun.”
Junior Caitlin Bettenay and sophomore Tabea Schwarz battled hard as the last court set in play. They helped the team take home a victory with winning both of their two sets 21-14, 21-14.
The Spartans are set to play in a three matches in the Hawaii Queen’s Cup tournament in Honolulu beginning Saturday at 9 a.m.
