Women’s golf places sixth in Silverado Showdown

San Jose State women’s golf team had a phenomenal performance at the Silverado Showdown in Napa. Competing with some of the top teams in the country such as USC, UCLA and Stanford, the team finished in the top-10.

The Spartans were not messing around as they finished Day 1 in first place out of the 18 teams competing.

It was an unusual victory as the team was carried by freshmen Antonia Malate and Maddie White. They have been progressing throughout the year, but top performers like senior Abegail Arevalo and freshman Natasha Andrea Oon were shown up by their teammates.

Malate shot her first under par in her collegiate career and managed to tie for third with White.

The Spartans finished the day with a two-shot lead over the three teams that were tied for second.

SJSU did fall behind on Day 2 as they finished the round in fourth place, just one shot behind USC.

As a whole, the team finished with a score of 300, which was 11 more strokes than its Day 1 score.

The final day started out well as SJSU had jumped up a placing within the first few holes. It went downhill on the back nine as the team shot a 299 and finished in sixth.

Oon shot par for the entire tournament and tied for second.

Starting Monday, the Spartans will compete in the Mountain West Championship.
