Multiple first-place finishes for women’s track in Honolulu

San Jose State women’s track and field traveled to Honolulu to compete in the Rainbow Relays where it was able get more practice competing in the outdoor season.

The Spartans killed every event they participated in Day 1. The team only competed in three events but managed to take the top spot in all of them.

Junior Jennifer Sandoval managed to finish first in the 800-meter and the 3000-meter. Right behind her by less than a second in both events was junior Jeanette Zambrano.

These events were definitely SJSU’s strong suit as all of its competitors were the top finishers. No runner from SJSU finished below top-five.

Throwing has never been a big focus on the team, but junior Silvia Gutierrez made her mark in placing first in the hammer throw with a distance of 49.21 meters — over a whole meter farther than the second place finisher from the College of Charleston.

The Spartans did prove to have trouble with the Day 2 events.

Sophomore Sarahvaughn King was SJSU’s top finisher in the 100-meter dash by coming in third with a time of 12.28 seconds.

The Spartans did have better luck in the 400-meter dash as senior Savanna Perez took first with a time of 1:00.34. She finished nearly four seconds before the second place finisher.

Out of the four Spartan runners in the 1500-meter event, two of them finished top-two. Freshmen Kai Bohannon and Mikayla Akers finished less than a second apart and managed to be two seconds faster than the rest of their competitors.

Another shining freshman this weekend was freshman Eseta Finau, who finished fourth in the pole vault, just 0.15 meters behind the competitors that tied for second.

The Spartans will be local next week as they go to compete in the Stanford Invitational starting on Friday.
