Spartan bats go off, SJSU beats New Mexico 22-18

San Jose State baseball grew tired of the University of New Mexico’s two weekend victories and beat them 22-18 in the final game of the series.

New Mexico (8-3, 2-1 MW) took the first two games, one of which was won by only one run. That was enough to fuel the high scoring Spartans (6-4, 1-2 MW) on day three.

SJSU started slow, giving up three runs in the first two innings. None of its three hits resulted in a run of its own.

In the third inning however, SJSU was ready to kick things off. It all started when freshman James Shimashita homered out to right field, finally putting SJSU on the board. It was his first collegiate home run.

After that, there was no turning back as the Spartans would go on to score four more runs in the third.

Junior Kellen Strahm hit a three-run homerun at the end of the fourth, putting SJSU up by nine runs going into the fifth.

As the bats were heating up for the Spartans, the Lobos were not ready to throw in the towel. In the seventh inning the Lobos answered back with eight runs, putting them only behind by three.

It was a matter of teamwork as the Spartans got base hit after base hit, putting up more runs on the board.

It had been a long weekend for SJSU when it came to the mound. The Spartans used a total of seven pitchers throughout the game, with only three of which pitching full innings.

For the final stretch of the game the Spartans pulled through putting up four runs at their last at bat.

New Mexico answered back with four as well but its efforts were not enough as it still finished four runs behind.

SJSU has only two days to rest until its next game against the University of San Francisco on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
