San Jose State baseball’s record fell to 3-1 after the team’s home opener. The Spartans were taken down by the University of the Pacific 8-1 on Tuesday night at Municipal Stadium.

The Spartans gave up six runs in the second inning, placing them in a deficit they could not come back from.

Freshman pitcher Jonathan Clark made his collegiate debut on to remember as he allowed one hit in four innings. The San Marcos native held the Tigers off by striking out six of their batters.

The Spartans took advantage of Clark’s pitching and put themselves on the scoreboard in the fourth.  Freshman James Shimashita knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice to bring in sophomore Kellen Strahm.

The hit was Shimashita’s 10th RBI as a Spartan placing him as the Mountain West leader of RBI’s.

Strahm was the offensive leader of the night as he went 3-4. He was followed by freshman Brandon Peterson who clinched 2 hits in his collegiate debut. Senior Aaron Pleschner also provided the Spartans with 2 hits.

The Spartans are staying home this weekend to host UC Riverside in a three-game weekend.

First pitch of the series is set for Friday night at 6 p.m. at Municipal Stadium.
