Women’s hoops climbs back on Boise State, stumble late

In a game of runs, San Jose State women’s basketball fell short to Boise State at home, 83-69.

It was a nightmare start for the Spartans (3-19, 2-9 MW) as they went down 18-0 to open up the game.

Halfway through the second quarter though, SJSU was all knotted up with the Broncos, in large part because of a 17-4 run that ran between periods.

“To go down 18-0 to Boise State, most never recover from that,”said Spartan head coach Jamie Craighead. “If you could play Boise State that tough and come back from that, you can go against a number of teams in this conference and hopefully we can get some results.”

Three Spartans finished in double figures, led by junior guard Analyss Benally off the bench, who had 17 points on 4-7 from beyond the arc and 5-5 from the line.

“I was just taking the shots that I know I needed to take,” said Benally.

The other pair was freshman guard Raziya Potter and sophomore forward Cydni Lewis who both shared 10 apiece.

The Broncos (19-3, 10-2 MW) took command of the second half as they stretched a 39-38 halftime lead to a 64-53 advantage, thanks to a 14-2 run during the third frame and never looked back.

“I just felt like we needed to be more disciplined,” said sophomore guard Danae Marquez. “We were tired but its not an excuse to why we lost the game.”

BSU was lead by junior guard Braydey Hodgins who hit five of the team’s nine 3-pointers in what seemed to be perfectly timed.

Following Hodgins was junior forward A’Shanti Coleman who finished the game with 20 points, six rebounds and a pair of steals.

Up next for the Spartans will be another home matchup against a top conference opponent, the New Mexico Lobos on Wednesday.
