Although the San Jose State gymnastics team finished last in its meet against UC Davis and Boise State Friday night, the team ended with a 194.175, its highest score of the season.
The Spartans finished just under the second-place Aggies, who finished with a 194.525, and the first-place Broncos who finished with a 196.525.
“We felt like it was a really good meet for us,” said head coach Joanne Bowers. “In our sport, lots of times, it’s about improving your best scores, and this is our best score so far.”
Junior Taylor Chan continued her dominance on the beam and the floor with team-best scores of 9.800 and 9.850, respectively. Chan’s floor routines have been her strongest event with an average score of 9.87, which is higher than her average from last season of 9.864.
Chan finished third in all around with a score of 39.125.
“It felt pretty good, hitting 39 again is overall the goal every single meet,” Chan said. “It feels good that I have hit that every meet so far and I am still working hard to get it up there.”
Another standout of the meet was junior Chelsey Andrada, who scored a season team-high 9.875 on the vaults.
“In practice, we do so many numbers so I think that is important to remember that when you’re out on the floor competing,” Andrada said. “Your body knows what to do so you just need to tell your mind you can do it.”
The Broncos got the highest score in the meet and the highest scores in every event.
The team received five different scores of 9.900 and above and had two of its athletes win overall, junior Courtney McGregor with a 39.275 and senior Shani Remme with a 39.400.
With heads high, the Spartans will travel up to Sacramento State on Friday for a head-to-head meet against the Hornets.
