Although San Jose State women’s basketball (1-10) highly improved from its previous game at Cal State Northridge, the team dropped its seventh straight against University of San Diego 83-79 on Friday.

The Spartans shot 44.9 percent from the field to end non-conference play, whereas the Toreros (7-4) shot 41.7 percent.

USD began the first quarter on a 7-0 run, followed by sophomore forward Cydni Lewis scoring the first bucket for the Spartans at 7:27 to make it 7-2.

SJSU fought back and held a four-point lead after the first. It only took senior forward Andrea Kohlhaas 10 minutes to score a career-high 9 points with three 3-pointers.

It was the complete opposite performance for the Spartans in the second quarter. The team was held to 17.6 percent shooting and saw themselves in an 11-point deficit at halftime.

However, they turned things around in the final 20 minutes.

Sophomore guard Megan Anderson got the ball rolling as she opened up the third quarter with back-to-back 3’s that eventually led to a 9-0 SJSU run. The Spartans were able to cut the deficit to 5 heading into the fourth.

They were able to make it a one-possession game at multiple times but couldn’t pull ahead.

In the loss, freshman guard Raziya Potter scored a team-high 15 points, followed by sophomore point guard Danae Marquez with 12 and Anderson with 10. Lewis finished with 6 points and 6 rebounds.

The Spartans will return to action in 2019 to begin Mountain West conference play at Fresno State January 2.
