San Jose State women’s basketball took its biggest loss of the season on Wednesday night at Cal State Northridge, 76-40.

The game handed the Spartans their sixth loss in a row and dropped them to a 1-9 record.

The Spartans got off to a slow start by scoring 10 points in the first quarter, followed by only six in the second.

Junior guards Analyss Benally and Fieme’a Hafoka were responsible for 12 of the 16 points in the first half. Hafoka leads the team with 104 total points and is second with a .426 field-goal percentage.

“We’re going to have to start hitting shots,” said head coach Jamie Craighead. “If I can figure out how to put them in a better position, that’s what we will be working on as a staff.”

Despite a disheartening first half, SJSU came out in the third quarter ready to cut down the deficit.

The team scored 20 points and shot 26.7 percent in the last half, as opposed to 18.8 percent in the first.

“We started hitting shots and then we were able to press on,” Craighead said. “We were able to turn it over a little bit, got 14 steals which was probably the highlight of the game — that pressure helped us.”

Despite the spirit-raising third quarter, a four-point fourth sentenced the Spartans to their ninth loss of the season.

SJSU will continue its trip down south and play its last game of 2018 against the UC San Diego Tritons on Friday.
