After a tournament filled with excitement, San Jose State men’s soccer fell to Grand Canyon University 1-0 in the Western Athletic Conference championship game Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans’ season came to a heartbreaking end as the GCU men’s soccer program claimed its first ever WAC championship title.
The game was intense right from the start. The first 20 minutes consisted of fouls being handed to both squads.
GCU had all the momentum as Spartan goalkeeper Alex Clewis had to make two quick saves from sophomore forward Josh Drack.
In the 24th minute, midfielder Alex Radilla made it 1-0 Antelopes on the team’s first SOG. The senior found the back of the net for his second goal of the year.
SJSU had more energy in the second half, but was unable to find the back of the net.
The team registered four SOG from sophomore midfielder Eduardo Buenfil, senior forwards Miguel Castillo and Zach Penner, and junior defender Jeff Dukes.
In their return from a one-game suspension, Penner played 33 minutes with a SOG while Clewis made three saves.
On the opposite side of the field, Lopes goalkeeper George Tasouris recorded four saves.
With the win, GCU will advance to the NCAA tournament and await its first-round opponent.
