Max Allen’s first-career goal was one to remember as it proved to be the game-winner in San Jose State men’s soccer 3-1 victory over the University of the Incarnate Word.

The sophomore midfielder recorded three shots, two of them on goal, to help the Spartans (7-7-2, 5-3-1 WAC) win back-to-back games.

“It came at a crucial time,” Allen told SJSU Athletics. “I was just happy to score for the team to put us in the lead. It was a big win.”

The Cardinals (2-12-1, 2-7 WAC) scored their only goal of the night early in the first half. Sophomore defender Maurits Gersen put his team up 1-0 with his first of the season at 4:35.

“The early goal against us really gave them a little bit of energy,” head coach Simon Tobin told SJSU Athletics. “I thought the most important thing of the whole evening was a goal before halftime.”

Sophomore midfielder Nicolas Brenes did just that at 26:42 and tied the game 1-1 with his first goal of the season. Defender Omar Lemus was credited with the lone assist.

Allen gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead with his unforgettable first-career goal at 64:41. He shot from 40 yards out to get it passed Cardinals freshman goalkeeper Carlos Mercado.

“It was a good goal,” Tobin told SJSU Athletics. “He’s got a good left foot and they gave him too much space and time.”

At 88:09, senior defender Andy Rios’ lone SOG on a penalty kick gave SJSU a much needed insurance goal that officially clinched a 3-1 victory.

Senior goalkeeper Alex Clewis recorded three saves. Brenes ended the night with a total of three shots, with two SOG.

The Spartans will conclude conference play at Spartan Soccer Field on Sunday against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (11-5, 6-3 WAC).
