Spartans shut out in Kansas City

The San Jose State men’s soccer team (3-5-2, 1-1-1 WAC) suffered its first defeat in Western Athletic Conference play this season as it fell 1-0 at Missouri-Kansas City Sunday morning.

The UMKC Kangaroos (2-7, 1-2 WAC) snapped a five-match losing streak as they picked up only their second win of the season thanks to a terrific goal during minute 14 from senior midfielder Lorant Lettner.

The Kangaroos capitalized with an interception on some careless passing from the Spartans in their own back third of the pitch. Lettner bent a chip shot to the inside of the right post for the match’s only goal which was assisted by junior forward Tim Staerz.

The Spartans dominated possession for the entire game but couldn’t get their attack going. They took four shots on goal and had nine corner kicks, but a solid performance from UMKC junior goalkeeper Filippo Errico kept the Spartans off of the scoreboard.

Sophomore midfielder Nicolas Brenes had two shots to lead the Spartans, and sophomore goalkeeper Rodrigo Reyes-Zavalza made two saves in his first appearance of the season.

The Spartans will look to rebound with their second conference victory of the season as they take on Grand Canyon University at the Spartan Soccer Field on Friday.
