San Jose State tennis went 10-18 in its season opener at the UNLV Fall Invitational this past weekend.
Playing in over 100 degree weather proved to be quite the challenge for SJSU as it did not have the best showing.
It was a rough first day for the Spartans as they managed to pick up only two victories out of eight combined matches.
Freshman Alba Pedrero Galindo won her college debut’s singles match in straight sets against Northern Arizona’s Adrianna Sosnowska.
Senior Miyo Kobayashi was the only other team member that did not get swept in her singles match.
The second victory on Friday was in doubles. Sophomore Savannah Sendar and Kobayashi defeated Southern Utah University 8-5.
Saturday proved to be a more successful day as the Spartans won six matches.
Junior Tamara Culibrk and Kobayashi won their singles matches to advance to separate consolation championships for Day 3. Freshman Mathilda Vidgren also snatched a singles victory for SJSU.
Freshmen duo Kristina Baran and Pedrero Galindo won their doubles match on Saturday as well.
SJSU concluded the invitational with two wins out of nine matches on Sunday.
The doubles pair of Culibrk and Vidgren clinched the consolation title against SUU’s Daniela Cozzi and Alex Ngo.
Pedrero Galindo finished her first collegiate tournament with a singles win against NAU’s Elrene Granville in a third-place match.
The team will resume tournament play in two weeks at the Saint Mary’s Invitational.
