Spartans limited to one shot on goal in loss to Titans

The offensive struggle continues for San Jose State women’s soccer as it was only allowed one shot on goal in a 2-0 home loss to Cal State Fullerton Thursday night.

This was the first time since 2013 that the Spartans (0-3-2) have gone winless after five games to start the season.

“We came out flat in the second half” said head coach Lauren Hanson. “We came out with a lot of energy and they responded well to our halftime talk, but it just wasn’t good enough.”

Junior forward Atlanta Primus executed on a penalty kick opportunity late in the 19th minute to put the Titans (3-3-1) up 1-0.

CSF finished with four shots on goal (SOG) in the first period, compared to SJSU’s one from junior forward Jamilecxth Becerra in the 15th minute.

“We didn’t come out as strong as we should’ve,” Becerra said. “We all need to push each other, work together and try to get more numbers in the box.”

It was a back-and-forth battle throughout the second period, until junior defender Dani Baldwin scored in the 78th minute and extended the Titans’ lead by two.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tianna Sanders and the CSF defense limited SJSU to the lone SOG and kept it silent for the rest of the game.

“Overall, there are things we need to work on as a whole,” said sophomore midfielder Darrian Reed. “I know that we can get to where we want to be. We just have to work on the little things.”

The Spartans will look to regroup and change momentum in Sunday’s home matchup against UC Davis.

“We need to come out and start right with good energy,” Hanson said. “We have to play hard and be better on the ball.”
