Spartans sweep Bears and Hornets under the rug in Northern Colorado

By Taylor Lupetti

A week after its Blue and Gold Exhibition, the San Jose State women’s volleyball team brought out the brooms and shut out both Northern Colorado University and Alabama State in Friday’s doubleheader.

SJSU faced NCU first where it took its first 3-0 shutout win of the day.

The Bears put up a fight in the first set with a rallying score until the Spartans scored a 28-26 victory.

Leading the Spartans’ with 15 kills for the match was redshirt junior outside-hitter Fernanda Vido. Freshman setter Mamie Garard racked 15 assists.

Senior libero Luiza Andrade dominated in digs with 16 for the match against the Bears.

Coming off the first shutout of the day, SJSU carried that energy to its next match against ASU for another win.

The Spartans never let the Hornets see 20 points in any of the sets.

Junior outside hitter Caitlin Bettenay took the lead with 13 kills to the Hornets’ Bayle’ Bennett who had six.

SJSU’s junior setter Kaitlynn Zdroik tallied 19 assists in the match against the Hornets with Garard not too far behind with 16.

Andrade led her team in digs again with 13 to help the Spartans secure their second shutout of the day.

The Spartans will continue their time at the Northern Colorado Classic tomorrow when they take on Pacific at 9 a.m.
