San Jose State women’s soccer scored its second goal of the season in its 1-1 tie to Cal Poly Thursday night.
The Spartans’ (0-2-1) junior forward Jamilecxth Becerra scored her second goal of the season in the second half that tied up the game against the Mustangs (0-2-2).
“The staff and I are super proud of how our team came out and competed from start to finish against a physical Cal Poly team,” head coach Lauren Hanson told SJSU Athletics. “It was a full team effort tonight with a lot of players getting quality minutes.”
Although the Spartans dominated possession in the first half and outshot the Mustangs 10-5, Cal Poly was able to find the net first in the 33rd minute with a goal by senior midfielder Sydney Knauer.
SJSU came out of the second half with full force, and in the 52nd minute knotted the game at one goal apiece. Becerra remains the only Spartan with a goal scored this season.
Freshman goalkeeper Kara Burns made her collegiate appearance in the game against the Mustangs and came out strong with a nine-save game.
“To come back and tie a game on the road shows the type of resilience this team his, which is a great quality to have for future games to come,” Hanson told SJSU Athletics.
Spartan sophomore forward Bella Bowers came out solid with four shots throughout the game, one being on goal.
The Spartan defense held strong through double overtime and was able to hold out to keep the game tied.
In search for its first win of the season, SJSU travels back home to face Kansas State Sunday afternoon.
