Spartans fall in overtime against Pilots; drop consecutive games to open season

By Madyson Montoya

San Jose State women’s soccer lost its second game of the season to the University of Portland 1-0 in overtime.

It was a slow first half as both teams were unable to get the ball in the net.

Freshman forward Jada Wilson was granted an opportunity at the 40-minute mark, but it was stopped by Pilot goalkeeper Rachel Lusby.

Portland had a different approach, and looked more aggressive from the start. The team had three shots on goal, all of which were saved by Spartan senior goalkeeper Paige Simoneau.

SJSU had two fouls back-to-back before the 30-minute mark. Portland did not get a foul until one minute before halftime.

The second half started out with two corner kicks from Portland and one from SJSU, but neither team took advantage.

Momentum was not picked up by either team as they both took continuous fouls throughout the second half.

The Spartans did not attempt any shots on goal and pushed the scoreless game into overtime. The Pilots scored two minutes in and defeated the Spartans 1-0.

The Spartans have a week to prepare for the next game against Cal Poly on Thursday.
