Baseball avoids elimination in 13-6 win over Nevada

In a complete slugfest, San Jose State baseball knocked out No. 1 seed Nevada in a 13-6 win to avoid elimination in the Mountain West Tournament Friday afternoon.

The Spartans (27-29) strung together 11 singles and three doubles to officially send the Wolf Pack (29-24) back to Reno.

SJSU faced Nevada six times this season and only walked away with one win at home, the same win that started their red-hot streak.

Junior right hander Tevin Cadola took the mound and pitched 6.1 innings while giving up five runs.

Cadola allowed only two hits through the first five innings and didn’t throw a pitch with a runner in scoring position.

The Spartans put up four runs in the first inning with two doubles and a sacrifice fly. They went on to score a run in the second, two runs in the third and another run in the sixth to give them an 8-0 lead.

Nevada cut the deficit in half in the sixth. The team hit a pair of two-run bombs by senior left fielder Grant Fennell and sophomore first baseman Dillan Shrum.

Shrum went on to hit a second home run in the game with a solo shot to left center in the eighth inning.

SJSU responded in the seventh with five runs to give the team its largest lead of the game. Two singles and a double gave the Spartans a 13-4 lead.

Senior third baseman David Campbell continued to dominate on offense as he went 3-for-6 with four RBIs.

Four other Spartan starters had two-RBI games and eight of the nine knocked at least one base hit in the game.

With the win, the Spartans will now go on to play the loser of the UNLV and San Diego State game tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
