Swiech’s 5.1 innings of work carry Spartans past Aztecs

San Jose State baseball snapped its nine-game losing streak to San Diego State after its 3-2 win Friday night.

The Spartans’ (22-25, 12-12 MW) three-run third inning and stellar pitching solidified the win over the Aztecs (33-16, 15-9 MW).

Senior right hander Jake Swiech (3-3) made his eighth start of the season and had one of his best outings. He pitched 5.1 frames of one-run baseball and kept the Spartans in the game.

With the Spartans’ 12th conference win, they took sole possession of third place in the Mountain West.

Although the Aztecs took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, the Spartans answered stronger in the third with an RBI double by senior third baseman David Campbell and a two-run single by sophomore catcher Johnny Mendoza.

A leadoff triple in the eighth allowed the SDSU to cut its deficit in half, but SJSU was able to get out of trouble by turning two.

Junior right handers Justin Watland and Fineas Del Bonta-Smith pitched 3.2 innings while striking out six batters. Del Bonta-Smith snagged his fourth save of the season.

Coming into the series, SJSU was ranked No. 5 in the country with 52 double plays turned. The Spartans turned their 53rd double play of the season Friday night.

The win Friday night was the first time the Spartans have beat the Aztecs in San Diego since April 16, 2014.

SJSU looks to carry the winning momentum into Saturday’s doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
