The Spartans (12-8) made a comeback in singles after losing the doubles point 1-0 to the Aztecs (10-12).
Despite the team’s efforts to move freshman Savannah Sendar back up to No. 1 doubles with senior Sybille Gauvain, the doubles pair fell 6-4.
Another change in the doubles lineup with junior Miyo Kobayashi and freshman Laura Malsert also proved unsuccessful, as the doubles pair lost 6-3 to their opponents.
Regardless of the oss in doubles, the team was still able to recover in singles matches for the win.
Kobayashi won her first three-set singles competition against Aztec Jenny Moinard since the 2017 Saint Mary Invitational.
“Miyo came back to win at No. 3 singles after being down 6-0, 3-0,” said head coach Chad Skorupka to SJSU Athletics. “I am so proud of her and the whole team. I have never seen anything like that in 20 years of coaching.”
After losing the first set 6-0, Kobayashi pushed through the second and third set with a 6-3, 6-4 win.
Sophomore Tamara Culibrk also won her singles match 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 against Aztec Paola Diaz, while Gauvain and sophomore Clara Mantaux both won their singles match 6-4, 6-2.
The Spartans will head into the all-day Mountain West Championship beginning Thursday in Boise.
