Bats go shy against the Dons

Coming in winning four of its last five San Jose State baseball fell to the University of  Francisco Tuesday night, 7-1.

The Spartans (14-21, 6-11 MW) plated just one of their 12 baserunners in the game against the Dons (21-16, 10-5 BW).

“It was probably all around our worst baseball of the year,” said interim head coach Brad Sanfilippo. “We have played very good baseball the last two weeks and we played not very good baseball tonight.”

Coming off his first win of the season in his last start, senior right hander Jake Swiech took the mound and allowed three earned runs over four innings.

On the first pitch of the game, junior left fielder Jonathan Allen, who leads USF in homeruns, launched a bomb to left center for the first run and hit of the game. A sacrifice fly later in the inning gave the Dons’ and early 2-0 lead.

“They had a good first inning,” said junior shortstop Aaron Pleschner. “They sent some balls in the gap and put a ball over the wall and I think that took the energy out of us.”

Strahm’s double cut the lead in half in the third inning, the Spartan’s only extra base hit of the game.

In the eighth and ninth innings, the Spartans had two pass balls and a wild pitch which played part in the three runs by the Dons’ in the late innings.

“It was just a lack of focus,” said senior second baseman Kyle Morrison. “It was a Tuesday game and we were a little lackadaisical, we just made a lot of mental mistakes.”

The team will head to Southern California to face Big West’s UC Riverside for a three-game series starting Friday at 6 p.m.
