San Jose State women’s tennis dropped its seventh match of the season to Fresno State Friday afternoon at Spartan tennis complex, 4-2.
After losing doubles 6-2 and 6-3 to the Bulldogs (8-11), the Spartans (11-7) headed into the singles down a point.
“What you don’t want to see as a coach is that we continue to play that low level, low energy of tennis that we saw in the singles,” said head coach Chad Skorupka. “That’s why we’re not going to beat a team like Fresno State.”
In the doubles matches, freshman Laura Malsert and junior Miyo Kobayashi dropped their match 6-3, followed by a 6-2 loss for senior Sybille Gauvain and freshman Savannah Sendar.
Bulldog sophomore Georgia Lawson fell 0-1 quickly to Malsert after a 6-2 set.
The freshman took the second set 6-4 and snagged the first point for the Spartans, tying the score at one point apiece.
Gauvain faced Bulldog junior Emma Wilson and they both came out swinging. Gauvain came out on top in the first set 6-4 and in a hard-fought second match to earn a 2-0 match win over the junior.
“I focused on my serve to try to put the first serve in,” Gauvain said. “It was working so I was a little bit more confident.”
Since it was senior day, the France native was honored before the game for all her dedication put into her time with the SJSU tennis team.
“On every single court, there was a tight match, mine as well,” Gauvain said. “I am proud that I was able to win on my senior day, but it was very tight.”
After tying the score, Spartan freshman Jackie Wagner, Kobayashi and sophomore Tamara Culibrk each fell 0-2 in their singles matches to give Fresno State the 4-2 victory.
The Spartans look to regain momentum when they face the University of Nevada on Sunday at noon.
