Humbling experience for gymnastics in Utah

By Allison Covey (@allisoncovey ):

Four San Jose State gymnasts that made the trip to the University of Utah for the NCAA Salt Lake City Regional did not place in their individual events.

They will not advance to the NCAA Championships.

Senior Kaitlin Won had a humbling night on bars. Her third regional appearance did not live up to her season standards with an 8.825, nearly an entire point sub of her season average in that event.

As for sophomore Taylor Chan, it was her second time competing at regionals and she represented her team on vault and floor.

Chen tied for 11th on the vault with a score 9.825, and tied for sixth on floor with a score of 9.900, which tied her season-high

Junior Ellie Pascoe-Long joined Chan on the vault and floor in her first regional appearance.

Pascoe-Long tied for 28th on vault with a 9.750, and finished last with 9.600 on her floor routine.

It was junior Stephanie Relova’s first time attending regionals. She qualified for the beam but her 9.650 score placed her 37th overall.

Utah’s Makenna Merrell-Giles and MyKayla Skinner and Stanford’s Elizabeth Price tied for first on floor with a 9.950, the highest scores of the night.

The Spartans did not qualify for the championships, but home team, University of Utah, won the team standings with a combined total of 197.475.

In hindsight, the event was moving for a young SJSU gymnastics squad, who is coming off their second MPSF championship in as many years, and hopefully inspires more members of the team to strive for higher heights next season.
