Spartans go for two-match sweep against the Broncos and Dons

San Jose State beach volleyball has the chance to beat both Santa Clara and San Francisco for the second time this season on Saturday.

The Spartans (7-10) have lost four of six, with the only victories including both of Saturdays competitors.
After being swept by Saint Mary’s on Thursday, SJSU is looking to bounce back.

The Spartans swept the Broncos (1-7) the last time they played almost three weeks ago. This was also the last time the Broncos played a match, as they’ve lose four in a row last month.

Two of the last four losses were against Saint Mary’s then No. 10 Arizona and SJSU. They were swept by the three teams and went 4-1 their first matchup against Saint Mary’s.

The Broncos only win was against Sacramento State, who has an overall record of 1-12.

San Francisco is also on a four-match losing streak, with matches against Saint Mary’s, SJSU, Cal and Pacific.
The Spartans won 3-2 against the Dons in their last match just two weeks ago.

For the No. 1 position, graduate student Lyndi Scholl and senior Nandyala Gama defeated freshman Anna Dalla Vecchia and graduate student Julia Topor in two sets, 21-19 and 21-15.

Senior Jamie Hirai and sophomore Thaliana Grajeda also swept opponents freshman Pi’kea Clemens and sophomore Shannon Levinson, 26-24 and 21-19.

Scholl and Gama have an overall record of 10-7. Their only losses have been against teams ranked in the top 20.

First serve is set at 9 a.m. against Santa Clara, followed by a 12 p.m. start against San Francisco.
