Even with the rain postponing Friday’s contest, San Jose State’s baseball team is preparing to take on the Mountain West’s best Nevada on Saturday and Sunday.
The Spartans (10-17, 3-8 MW) have lost seven of their last eight games and have not played at home since March 27.
The Wolf Pack (15-11, 9-3) are on a three-game losing streak, taking loses from conference-neighbor UNLV and a non-conference matchup with Oregon State.
The last time these two teams played, Nevada swept the Spartans in a three-game series in Reno.
Pitching has been a struggle as well for the Spartans. In the last game against UC Davis, the Spartans went through 10 pitchers and five the game before.
The only pitcher that has not lost a game yet this season for SJSU is junior Andrew Mitchell, who’s 3-0.
Although the bats have been rough for the team as a whole, that has not stopped senior outfielder Brett Bautista from his killer batting average.
The team’s batting average is .236 but Bautista is ranked second in the Mountain West with a .405 clip.
Nevada has been able to keep their games close, only losing by one run with extra innings in both games played against Oregon State.
Power is something the Spartans ought to be careful with against the Wolf Pack. Nevada hit three home runs in the fourth inning of their last game from senior outfield Mike Echavia, senior utility player Grant Fennell and sophomore catcher Marco Valenzuela.
The new start time for the games are Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at noon, but are subject to change if weather becomes a problem.
