Spartans visit Davis for non-conference game

San Jose State baseball looks to brush off the 16-run loss Saturday in Air Force as it travels to UC Davis on Tuesday for a midweek non-conference game.

The two teams have a long history, dating back to 1962 with a 43-37-1 Spartan (10-16, 3-8 MW) advantage. The Aggies (7-15, 1-2 BW) however, have won the last two meetings.

The last time SJSU played baseball on a diamond, the final score was terrifying.

The Spartans were sent home swallowing a 19-3 loss on Falcon Field Saturday, after winning their first game of the season outside of California the day before.

UC Davis on the other hand, is coming off a 10-5 win against UC Riverside.

Aggies senior Brad Pluschkell had three hits and three runs in the game and will be something for Spartan pitching to deal with.

For SJSU, senior left fielder Brett Bautista will look to bounce back after a rough weekend in Colorado Springs.

The good news is he still tops Mountain West with a .420 batting average, but contact is a must for him Tuesday night.

Another senior, first baseman Shane Timmons is back to his home run-hitting self.

He hit his 22nd homer of his career Saturday and now sits tied for third on the SJSU all time HR list.

All of the attention has to shift to their pitching for SJSU as it is 8-2 this season when its given up four runs or fewer.

Flip it, and when the Spartans allow five or more, they are 2-14.

That means starting pitching has to last until at least the middle innings, otherwise big innings can doom SJSU, as they have all year.

The first pitch is set for 2.30 p.m.
