Sharks unarmor the Knights, extend win streak to six games

By Taylor Lupetti (@tayclupetti):

Left-wing forward Logan Couture’s backhand shot from the slot 39 seconds into overtime gave the San Jose Sharks a 2-1 win against the Vegas Golden Knights.

It was a battle of the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the Pacific Division Thursday night in San Jose, but the game-winning goal extended the Sharks’ (42-23-9) win streak to a season-high of six and they now trail first-place Golden Knights (47-21-6) by seven points.

Also, the win snapped Vegas’ three-game win streak.

The Knights struck first when left-wing forward Tomas Tatar scored in the first four minutes of the opening period on a backhand shot. After a scoreless period from San Jose, Vegas headed into the second period with a 1-0 lead.

Defenseman Brent Burns came to the Sharks’ aid at 3:27 of the second period and tied it up 1-1 with a wrist shot from the point.  The goal ended the defenseman’s 15-game goal drought.

San Jose goaltender Martin Jones made 26 saves during the game. Vegas backup goalie Malcolm Subban made 42 saves. Subban had not been in the net since Feb. 2, but guarded tonight in place of Marc-Andre Fleury who is out with an injury.

The Sharks are staying home for one more game on Saturday at 1 p.m. against the Calgary Flames before they head out on a four-game road trip.
