Following Friday’s sweeping loss against the Gaels (7-5) ending the San Jose States’ five-match winning streak, the Spartans were not able to redeem themselves against the Broncos with a close 4-3 finish.
This loss puts the Broncos (6-5) at a four-match winning streak and gave the Spartans (9-4) their second loss of the weekend.
“It was definitely a tough loss for us,” freshman Savannah Sendar said. “We battled really hard for the match, but at the end we lost the game.”
The Broncos topped the Spartans at doubles one 7-5, and doubles two 6-3 with doubles three left unfinished at 6-6.
Sendar had a strong finish in singles (6-0, 6-0) to give the first point for the team, but singles proved to be just as much a challenge for the Spartans.
Senior Sybille Gauvain (6-4, 6-2) and freshman Jackie Wagner (6-4, 6-1) also finished well in singles, but SJSU was not able to pull through in the final three matches.
The last two singles matches were intense for both teams as the Spartans needed to win one match to win the game, but they didn’t.
SJSU cheered their teammates sophomore Tamara Culibrk and freshman Laura Malsert when their matches went into a third set.
Culibrk finished with a 6-4, 2-6, 4-6 loss and Malsert finished with a 7-5, 5-7, 5-7 loss.
The Broncos kept the Spartans moving their feet and running back forth on the court, burning them out.
SJSU will next challenge UC San Diego March 27.
