Freshman Savannah Sendar did her part in leading the San Jose State women’s tennis to its fourth straight win as she improved to 7-0 in singles play while SJSU took care of the visiting Cal Poly Mustangs with ease, 4-0.
The Spartans (8-2) and Mustangs (3-7) were scheduled to play on Saturday, however because of rain in the forecast and the fact that the new Spartan Tennis Complex does not have a roof, the match was postponed until Sunday.
But that didn’t matter for the Spartans as they opened up doubles play and took care of business.
Senior Sybille Gauvain and Sendar and junior Miyo Kobayashi tagged with freshman Laura Malsert both cruised with 6-1 victories in their doubles games.
“We put some good serves in, and some good returns and finished it well up on the net,” said Gauvain after the win. “We were just focusing on that and it worked.”
Gauvain later gave the Spartans another point as she won her singles match with a pair of 6-3 sets against Cal Poly’s MacKenzie Worsnop.
Her doubles partner Sendar came out victorious as well as she won her singles match 7-6, 6-1 as continues her undefeated singles campaign.
“They competed harder than anyone expected to day I think, said Sendar. “But we got through it and took care of business.”
The final point for the Spartans came from sophomore Tamara Culibrk who won her singles match against Seriana Saltzen 6-1, 6-2.
SJSU’s head coach Chad Skorupka said the doubles point set the stage for the remainder of the match.
“We got the quick doubles point,” Skorupka said. “But many games we’re very leveled. “You could see by the remaining scores how tight it was going to be”
Today’s win improves the Spartans record to 8-2 halfway through the season.
Next match for SJSU will be against Sacramento State on Friday.
