Diving team heads to Arizona for NCAA Zone E Championships

By Madyson Montoya (@MadysonMontoya):

San Jose State is sending its three divers to Flagstaff, Ariz. to compete at the NCAA Zone E diving championships for a three-day event starting Monday.

This is a big week for seniors Kylie Fonseca and Cari Reiswig — the only seniors on the team. They were SJSU’s top divers at the championship last year and this is their last time to compete at Northern Arizona University. The two will  be joined by sophomore Natasha Sondeno, who also looks to cap off her impressive year by qualifying for the next event.

Reiswig has a chance to make it to the finals in the 1-meter event for the third straight year. Fonseca didn’t make finals last year but placed 40th overall last time around.

With over 60 teams competing in the event, making finals is going to be difficult for the Spartans. Only the top 18 of each event get to advance.

A good amount of nationally ranked teams will be at the championship including No. 2 UC Berkeley and No. 8 USC.

The divers have not competed since the Mountain West championships two weeks ago where the Spartans had three platform divers place in the top 20.

The diving team has a history of performing well in the first day or two of competition, but tend to score lower as the meet progresses.

The biggest focus for the divers is to stay sharp and maintain strength throughout the entire meet to keep the points high.

The meet will get underway Monday morning.
