San Jose State women’s soccer (1-5-2) conceded 3 goals in the second half in its 3-0 loss to the University of New Mexico (4-2-2) at the UNM Soccer Complex in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Thursday.
Coming off a 0-0 score at halftime, the Lobos dominated with an early goal in the second half. Senior midfielder Alysa Whelchel found the right side of the goal from a back pass by senior forward Nicole Anderson in the 47th minute.
Anderson scored the two other goals for UNM in the 54th and 62nd minutes. The Lobos totaled 16 shots and 2 corners.
The Spartans’ defense fought hard in their defensive third in the first half to keep the game scoreless. Junior goalkeeper Paige Fry turned in another strong performance for the Spartans, despite the loss.
“We had a really good first half,” SJSU head coach Sonia Curvelo said. “Paige Fry made some big saves to keep it 0-0 in the first half.”
Fry recorded her fourth game with 8 saves, matching her career-high this season. Fry had 6 saves on UNM’s 10 shots in the first half.
The Spartans had a total of 9 shots and 3 corners. Sophomore forward Maryam Ladkani recorded 4 shots, the most on the team.
SJSU will face the University of Texas at El Paso at noon on Sunday at University Field in El Paso, Texas.
